How can you explain this space?
The area assigned is already limited. Bounded on all sides by some form of demarcation of property, the individuals of this space have chosen to use their space as a dump - a repository of broken dreams, castaways of failures or just plain nastiness?
What is the Urban Edge?
Joel Garreau (1999) describes the Urban Edge as the "edge city". It is here the expanding role of the Urban periphery is realized. It is here that Urban dwellers negotiate their space within the confines set out by government urban planners.
The following pictures from Google earth show two "edge" areas which fall under the boundaries of the city - namely Mon Repos and Pleasantville. These areas are the result of a housing initiative of the National Housing Authority (now called HDC) to meet the demands for housing in the industrial city of the country. The homes were ment for those who worked at TEXACO (now PETROTRIN) and neighboring industries. Over the years the areas have been modified and have grown into semi-self contained areas within the city bounds.
